La Jolla Bluff

Perched above the La Jolla coastline, this residence called for a landscape that could hold its own against one of Southern California’s most arresting backdrops — the sea cliffs, the glittering Pacific, the particular quality of light that settles over this neighborhood in the late afternoon. The answer wasn’t to compete with any of it. It was to build something that belonged.

A stacked fieldstone retaining wall anchors the tiered backyard, its rough texture a deliberate counterpoint to the home’s crisp white stucco. Limestone stairs descend from the upper entertaining terrace — shaded by a reclaimed wood pergola and outfitted with a full outdoor kitchen — to a lower garden level where a gravel fire pit circle, flush-set spa, and a generous lawn unfold in easy sequence. Teak chairs face a boulder-base fire pit, and just beyond the low garden wall, the La Jolla pier and sea cliffs hold the horizon.

The entry sets the tone before you reach the back. Mature olive trees frame a reclaimed wood gate and arched front door set into a white plaster surround — a composition that feels simultaneously contemporary and rooted in the Mediterranean. Through the side gate, an antique stone basin fountain anchors a small courtyard, its single copper jet barely audible over the breeze.

Reclaimed wood carries through the entire property: the pergola structure, the garden gates, an outdoor shower tucked along the side passage with mosaic tile underfoot. It’s the thread that holds the material palette together and gives the landscape its warmth. Against the stone, the stucco, the steel fixtures, and the deep green of olive and agave, the wood ages beautifully and belongs completely.

The planting is layered and coast-adapted — olive, agave, ornamental grasses, lavender, mounding boxwood, citrus, and a sweep of succulents at the base of the entry steps. Nothing here is fussy. It’s a garden built for the way people actually live near the ocean: barefoot, unhurried, with salt air and good light as the constants.
